Formation Center
In
September 2003, the Missioners, in conjunction with Bishop Scarpone of the
Diocese of Comayagua, purchased land in the poorer region of Comayagua. Adjacent
to the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, the JPII Formation Center will seek to
be a lay community of both people from the United States and Hondurans engaged
in discipleship, evangelization, and discernment. Groundbreaking began in late
2003, and the entire project is expected to cost $350,000. The Missioners, St.
Matthew’s Catholic Church, other parishes and individual benfactors are working
together to raise funds for this project, which will be central to all other
services being offered in Honduras. In May of 2006 the first group of 12 long
term volunteers moved into the dormitory facility and construction continues on
the other parts of the center as money is available.
The Center is designed to house up to 40 long
term Missioners who come and serve the poor at the orphanages, parishes,
mountain villages, youth formation programs and the medical center (to name only
a few opportunities). In addition to our collaboration with the Franciscan
Friars, the Missioners hope to provide lay support to staff all these
ministries.

In
keeping with our philosophy of empowering the local community, the Center is
being built solely by Hondurans. Daniel Hinckley serves as the Project Manager
for the Missioners, coordinating with Honduran contractors, architects, and
laborers.
The outer perimeter wall was completed in the
early summer of 2004. The first dormitory facility opened in May of 2006, and
the next phase (currently in construction) is to build the chapel, which will be
central to the entire complex... both physically and spiritually. The chapel is
scheduled to be completed in February of 2007.
With the help of our benefactors, and the
grace of God, the Missioners and the Diocese of Comayagua intend to bring
Eucharistic adoration to the neighborhood within this chapel.
We have raised approximately 40% of the total
funds needed to complete the Center. As of December 2006, we now have a
community of twelve Long Term volunteers living in the new dormitory facility
(both missionaries from the states and from Honduras). If you feel God is
calling you to support this project in some way, please contact us at
